The UK will not retaliate against US trade duties and is seeking to reach an agreement that will reduce their impact. Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said that London would remain restrained and work towards an agreement as the United States is a key ally of the UK, the BBC reported.
Donald Trump has announced a new minimum duty of 10% on all imported goods and higher tariffs for key economic partners. In particular, goods from the European Union will be subject to a 20% duty, from China – 34%, from Switzerland – 31%, from India – 26%, from Brazil and the UK – 10%. The US President also confirmed a 25% duty on all cars manufactured outside the United States.
London received one of the lowest duties among major economies, which indicates Washington’s desire to maintain stable relations with the British side. Experts believe that Rishi Sunak’s government will take advantage of this to further negotiate with the US administration to ease restrictions.
