7 April – Tel Aviv – MK Gilad Kariv (Democrats) was summoned for questioning by the Lahav 433 police unit, which specialises in combating corruption and serious crimes. He is suspected of leaking confidential information from a meeting of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee that took place almost two years ago.
The case was initiated by the Speaker of the Knesset
The investigation began following a complaint filed by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana in late 2024. It was Ohana who asked the government’s legal adviser, Gali Baharav-Miar, to open a case against Kariv based on an internal investigation by a parliamentary security officer.
According to the report, Kariv read the minutes of the closed meeting and highlighted parts that were subsequently published in a column by journalist Ben Caspit. The publication suggests that it was Kariv who may have passed confidential information to the journalist.
Kariv: “This is political revenge”
In a commentary to the media, Kariv categorically denied his guilt, calling the complaint “politically motivated”.
“I never endangered the state of Israel. If we are talking about leaks, they have been constant – from the military-political cabinet, the government and the Knesset commission itself,” he said.
Kariv also noted that during the Gaza war, it was leaks of important information that damaged hostage rescue operations, and added that none of those investigations were ever carried out.
Willingness to cooperate
According to representatives of the deputy’s entourage, he is ready to cooperate with the investigation and comply with any decisions of the prosecutor’s office or the police. At the moment, he has not been formally charged.
The case may become a precedent for parliamentary ethics and security, as it involves a leak from one of the most secure Knesset committees dealing with defence, intelligence and international policy.
