While US President Donald Trump is promoting his own peace initiative for Ukraine, which is likely to leave some of the occupied territories to Russia, American volunteers continue to fight in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported by DW.
“We are afraid that our sacrifices will be in vain”
According to one of the US military volunteers, Zach, the main concern is that a potential deal promoted by the Trump administration would devalue the fight of both Ukrainian soldiers and foreign legionnaires:
“We are afraid that everything we fought for and lost will be ignored. It will look like our sacrifices were in vain.”
Volunteers are on the front line against all odds
Despite the diplomatic manoeuvres, American soldiers at the front are convinced that the war is far from over, and their presence and support for Ukraine is a matter of honour.
“We are here because we believe in Ukraine. It’s not just politics, it’s the fight between good and evil,” said another legionnaire.
Context.
Amid Trump’s attempts to reach an agreement with Moscow, which, according to experts, could be beneficial to the Kremlin, fighting continues in Ukraine, with American citizens taking part in it. They emphasise that any truce should not betray the idea of freedom and justice, which have already been paid for with the lives of thousands of people.
American volunteers remain on the ground – even when the word “truce” is used in Washington.
