Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said that more and more countries will arm themselves with nuclear weapons in the coming years. In a post on Telegram, Medvedev accused the West of pushing the world towards World War III by supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia, Reuters reports .
Referring to the New START treaty signed with Barack Obama in 2010, Medvedev said that the risk of a nuclear conflict had reached a historic high and that the prospect of nuclear disarmament was zero.
“Even if the war in Ukraine ends, nuclear disarmament is impossible in the coming decades,” said the Vice President of the Russian Security Council.
Medvedev was responding to recent statements by Emmanuel Macron and British officials who emphasised the increased role of their nuclear arsenals in deterring Russia.
“The world will create new, even more destructive weapons, and new states will acquire nuclear capabilities,” he added.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, Russia and the United States have 88% of all nuclear warheads, followed by China, France, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea.
