The United States Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, has resigned amid growing pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration. According to the Financial Times, citing informed sources, the resignation was the result of deep political differences between Brink and Washington’s new foreign policy strategy towards Kyiv.
According to Western diplomats in Kyiv, Brink has been one of the most consistent defenders of Ukraine in the international arena since the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion. She has actively promoted support for the Ukrainian resistance, both publicly and in behind-the-scenes negotiations. However, after Trump’s inauguration on 20 January, her position changed significantly.
An analysis of her posts on social network X conducted by FT journalists shows a radical change in rhetoric: while before the inauguration she mentioned Russia in 53 critical posts in 75 days, afterwards she mentioned it in only five, and never once blamed it for military aggression.
Sources indicate that the pressure came not only from the Trump team, which demanded a revision of the rhetoric on the war, but also from Ukrainian officials, who considered the ambassador too critical of the fight against corruption.
One Western diplomat described Brink as a “strong personality” who was caught between a rock and a hard place – the new White House policy and the demands of the Ukrainian authorities.
