US President Donald Trump is considering imposing new sanctions against Russia if a truce in the war against Ukraine is not reached by the end of April. Axios reports this, citing sources in the White House and aerial surveillance data.
According to the newspaper, on Friday, 11 April, US Special Representative Steve Vitkoff will arrive in Moscow to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This is the third meeting between the two since the beginning of the year. Last week, Vitkoff also hosted Kremlin special envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Washington, indicating that informal diplomatic channels have been intensified.
Trump, according to Axios, is demanding a quick end to the fighting and is frustrated by the slow progress in the talks. If the talks fail, he is ready to use additional economic leverage, either through executive orders or through Congress.
This diplomatic pressure from Washington may mark a new stage in US foreign policy towards the Russian-Ukrainian war, which continues to be one of the most acute international conflicts.
