Russia launches missile strike on centre of Sumy: over 20 civilians killed

On Sunday, 13 April, Russian troops launched a rocket attack on the centre of Sumy, killing more than 20 civilians. This was reported by the acting mayor of Sumy, Artem Kobzar.

According to him, the strike hit the residential sector, where civilians were present at the time.

“Today, as a result of the missile strike, there are many dead… The enemy has struck again at civilians,” Kobzar wrote on Telegram.

Later, he clarified that more than 20 people were already known to have died.

“On this bright day of Palm Sunday, our community suffered a terrible tragedy. The enemy launched a missile attack on civilians. We already know about more than 20 dead,” said the mayor.

Prior to the strike, air alerts were declared in a number of regions of Ukraine due to the threat of ballistic missile attacks.

Powerful explosions were heard in Sumy, and a huge column of smoke rose over the site of the hit.

The rescue services continue to deal with the aftermath of the impact and dismantle the rubble.
