The European Union’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, has called on EU leaders to refrain from participating in military celebrations in Moscow on 9 May, stressing the importance of supporting Ukraine in the face of a full-scale war. This was reported by Politico.
Speaking on 14 April in Luxembourg after a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas stressed that any participation in the events in Moscow would be perceived as an unfriendly move by the European community.
“It was very clearly stated that participation in parades or celebrations on 9 May in Moscow would be taken seriously by the European side, given that Russia is waging a full-scale war in Europe,” Kaja Kallas said.
Moscow is waiting for guests – Brussels warns
According to Politico, Vladimir Putin has invited the leaders of China, India, Brazil, and the prime ministers of Slovakia and Serbia to celebrate May 9. These are the countries that do not yet support a tough policy of sanctions against Russia.
At the same time, Kaja Kallas stressed that the EU expects the candidate countries to avoid such symbolic steps that could undermine European unity in security matters.
Kyiv instead of Moscow
The EU High Representative called on all member states not only to ignore Russia’s celebrations, but also to visit Kyiv as often as possible to show support for the Ukrainian people.
“Our solidarity must be visible. And the best place for this is Kyiv,” Kallas concluded.
It is expected that the issue of a diplomatic boycott of the events in Moscow will become one of the key issues in the preparations for 9 May in European capitals. The European Union continues to form a united front against any attempts by the Kremlin to legitimise its aggressive policy through international presence at symbolic events.
