Ukraine has not received an official refusal from Bulgaria regarding equipment from Belene NPP – Energy Ministry

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has not yet received an official confirmation from the Bulgarian government that it has cancelled the sale of two reactors from the unfinished Belene NPP, which were to be used to complete the Khmelnytsky NPP.

This was reported to Suspilne by the press service of the ministry, stressing that Ukraine remains interested in purchasing Russian equipment, despite recent statements by Bulgarian officials.

“The completion of Khmelnytskyi NPP is a strategic step to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security. We are convinced that the agreement on equipment is mutually beneficial for both parties,” the Energy Ministry said in its response.

As a reminder, on 15 April, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov publicly stated that his country would not sell Russian nuclear reactors stored at the Belene NPP site to Ukraine. However, the government’s formal position has not yet been communicated to Kyiv in an official format.

Earlier, on 11 February, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the purchase of Bulgarian equipment, but a separate law is needed to start the actual work on completing the power units. In March, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko submitted a report to the Bulgarian parliament on the results of the negotiations, which confirmed Ukraine’s readiness to sign the deal.
