In the evening of 16 April, Russian troops launched a large-scale assault on the southern frontline, involving significant forces. The attack took place at around 18:00 and covered an area near the settlements of Pyatikhatky, Stepove, Lobkove, Mala Tokmachka and Mali Shcherbaki. This was reported by the Defence Forces of Southern Ukraine.
According to the military, they were involved in the assault:
- at least 320 Russian military personnel,
- 40 units of armoured combat vehicles,
- 3 tanks,
- about 10 buggies.
The enemy used units of the 58th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces in an attempt to break through the Ukrainian defences on a wide front with the support of armoured vehicles.
Despite the scale of the offensive, the Ukrainian Defence Forces successfully repelled the assault, inflicting losses on enemy manpower and equipment. Specific enemy losses are being clarified.
Ukrainian troops continue to control the situation in this area, holding their positions and restraining enemy pressure.
“Even such a powerful strike did not break our positions. The enemy was forced to retreat, suffering significant losses,” the report said.
The operational situation in the south remains tense but under control.
