On Thursday, 17 April, the hryvnia exchange rate once again showed a weakening against major currencies. According to market monitoring data, the average selling rate of the US dollar in exchange offices increased by 10 kopecks to UAH 41.40, while the euro rose by 20 kopecks to UAH 47.20.

At the same time, the exchange rate has also risen: the dollar is bought for an average of UAH 40.80 and the euro for UAH 46.40.

On the interbank market, the US currency rose by 5 kopecks to UAH 41.32-41.35 per dollar (buy and sell).

The strengthening of the dollar and euro is also reflected in the official exchange rate of the National Bank of Ukraine. As of 17 April:

  • The official dollar exchange rate was set at UAH 41.2152 (+ UAH 0.0399);
  • The official exchange rate of the euro is UAH 46.8205 (+ UAH 0.2101).

Experts attribute this development to the overall demand for foreign currency amid business activity and imports, as well as to market players’ psychological expectations of possible fluctuations in foreign exchange earnings. Market participants are closely monitoring the NBU’s actions, in particular the volume of interventions and possible steps towards currency liberalisation.
