Beijing insists it is neutral in the war and calls Kyiv’s claims “groundless”.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday, 19 April, strongly rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s accusations that Beijing is allegedly supplying Russia with weapons and gunpowder. This was reported by Reuters.

The statement was made after Zelenskyy accused China not only of supplying weapons, but also of manufacturing them in Russia.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed:

“China has never provided lethal weapons to any party to the Ukrainian conflict. Our position on Ukraine has always been clear: we call for a ceasefire and a transition to peaceful negotiations.”

The Beijing official also said that China opposes political manipulation and considers Kyiv’s accusations to be groundless. Lin added that according to Ukraine’s official data, most of the weapons components imported by Russia come from the United States and Western countries, not China.

China between two fires

Despite three years of close economic cooperation with Russia, China is trying to maintain an image of neutrality, avoiding direct involvement in the war. Beijing continues to declare a “policy of peace” while deepening strategic cooperation with Moscow, which is distrusted by Kyiv and the West.
