The US Army carried out an airstrike on the strategic oil port of Ras Issa in western Yemen, causing massive civilian casualties. According to recent reports, the attack killed at least 38 people and injured 102 others.
This was reported by the Houthi rebel-owned Al-Massirah TV channel, citing local health authorities in the city of Hodeida, one of the rebel strongholds.
Initial reports indicated 20 dead and 50 wounded, but the number of victims continues to rise.
The US army officially confirmed the operation, saying that the aim of the strike was to “completely destroy the facility” used by the Houthis for their military purposes.
Against the backdrop of the attack, Houthi rebels announced mass protests across the country – not only against the US actions, but also in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis have controlled a large part of Yemen since 2014, when the country’s civil war erupted. The conflict has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
