On Sunday, 20 April, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir made a working visit to Syria, where he assessed the operational situation together with the Commander of the Northern Command, Major General Ori Gordin, the Commander of the 210th Division, Brigadier General Yair Peli, and other senior officers.
During the visit, Zamir met with commanders and soldiers serving in the border region and approved updated action plans in both defensive and offensive formats.
Israel’s strategic presence in Syria
“This area is critically important. We came here after the collapse of Syrian statehood, and that is why we hold key positions and are on the front line to defend ourselves in the most effective way,” Zamir said in his statement to the military.
According to him, the territory where the IDF is deployed is of strategic importance for Israel’s security, and the very fact that the military is present on the heights allows it to control the entire ridge line and respond to any threat in a timely manner.
The priority is the safety of Israelis
Lieutenant General Zamir stressed that “the IDF will continue to operate in the border security zone and protect Israeli citizens from any danger.” Despite the uncertainty in the region, the army is prepared for any scenario.
This visit comes amid growing tensions on the northern border, the intensification of Iranian proxies in the region, and threats from groups using Syrian territory to attack Israel.
