On Tuesday, cardinals from around the world are gathering in the Vatican to prepare for the funeral of Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88 from a stroke and cardiovascular collapse. It is reported by Reuters.

The Holy See said that Francis’ death, which came after a short rehabilitation and public appearance at Easter, was sudden. The death activated ancient church rituals: in particular, the “Fisherman’s Ring” and the Papal Seal were destroyed so that they could no longer be used.

“We thank the Lord for the gifts he has given to the Church through the apostolic ministry of Pope Francis, the pilgrim of hope,” said Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, leading prayers on Monday evening in St Peter’s Square.

At 9:00 am, all the cardinals present in Rome gathered at the Vatican to agree on the date of the funeral and discuss the interim leadership of the Church until a new pontiff is elected.

The funeral ceremony is expected to take place between Friday and Sunday. Among the world leaders who have already confirmed their attendance are US President Donald Trump (despite tensions with the Pope over migration) and Argentine President Javier Milei, who represents Francis’ homeland.

In his last will and testament, released by the Vatican, Francis broke with tradition and expressed his desire to be buried in St Mary the Great Basilica in Rome, not St Peter’s Basilica.

The conclave, which will elect the new pope, will begin no earlier than 6 May, according to tradition, 15-20 days after the pontiff’s death. About 135 cardinals are eligible to vote, and the election could last several days.
