Former U.S. Vice President and environmental activist Al Gore made a high-profile statement during an event in San Francisco dedicated to Climate Week. In his speech, he compared Donald Trump’s administration to the Nazi regime of the 1930s and 1940s and accused the current president of creating an “alternative reality” to achieve political goals. This was reported by Politico.
“I understand how inappropriate comparisons with the Third Reich are. But there are lessons we must learn,” Gore said.
He quoted the philosopher Theodor Adorno:
“The first step to disaster is turning truth into a matter of power,” he added:
“The Trump administration is attacking the very essence of the distinction between truth and lies.”
According to Gore, Trump is ignoring the scientific facts about climate change, spreading myths about energy, and openly playing on xenophobia to strengthen his power.
“They say that windmills cause cancer, and sea level rise is just more real estate by the ocean,” Gore sneered.
In his speech, he also mentioned Martin Luther King Jr. and Pope Francis, highlighting how authoritarian leaders use migrants as scapegoats.
This speech was part of a wave of harsh criticism of Trump by the Democratic Party. Earlier, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton also publicly condemned the president’s actions, which they said undermined freedom, the Constitution and the international position of the United States.
“Our Constitution was created to protect us from threats like Trump,” Gore concluded, receiving a standing ovation from the audience.
