ISTANBUL – On Wednesday, 23 April 2025, a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook Istanbul, a metropolis of 16 million people located on the European and Asian shores of the Bosphorus Strait. This was reported by the Turkish Emergency Management Agency AFAD, noting that it was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the city in recent years.

According to preliminary reports, no significant damage was reported, but residents evacuated buildings en masse as the city shook. The epicentre of the earthquake, which occurred at 12:49 local time (09:49 GMT), was located in the Silivri district, about 80 km west of Istanbul. The depth of the centre was 6.92 km, AFAD said.

TGRT TV reported that one person was injured after jumping from a balcony during the earthquake, which occurred on a public holiday in Turkey. AFAD urged residents of the region to refrain from entering potentially damaged buildings.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) estimated the quake’s magnitude at 6.02, noting that the centre was 10 km deep.
