The European Commission has fined tech giants Apple and Meta a total of more than €700 million for violating antitrust laws. This decision was made amid growing tensions between the EU and the US, in particular over the economic protectionism of the Donald Trump administration. This was reported by The New York Times.
Apple was fined for restricting third-party developers’ access to its own payment system on iOS devices, while Meta was fined for forcing users to accept personalised advertising without an alternative. Brussels called the actions of both companies a “systematic abuse of market dominance”.
At the same time, the EU has issued a stark warning: the rules of digital fairness will remain in place despite external pressure. This is a signal to both US companies and the future US president, particularly in light of Trump’s possible return to power and his tough America First policy.
