Donald Trump’s ultimatum to recognise Russia’s annexation of Crimea has put European capitals in a difficult position. This step is forcing Europe to rethink its policy towards Ukraine’s territorial integrity and relations with the United States. This was reported by theFinancial Times.

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in the 2024 presidential election, has said that the US should recognise Crimea as part of Russia if it helps end the war in Ukraine. This statement has raised concerns among European leaders, who fear that such a stance could undermine international law and encourage further Russian aggression.

European countries, particularly Germany and France, insist on respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, pressure from the United States may force them to reconsider their position or seek compromise solutions that take into account new geopolitical realities.

For its part, Ukraine strongly rejects any concessions on Crimea. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that peace is possible only after the full restoration of the country’s territorial integrity.

This situation presents Europe with a dilemma: either to support Ukraine and the principles of international law, or to make concessions in the name of ending the war. The decision that will be made will have far-reaching consequences for security and stability in the region.
