President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held an important meeting in Rome with President of the Italian Council of Ministers Giorgio Meloni to discuss further strengthening military support and security guarantees for Ukraine. The talks took place against the backdrop of a deteriorating security situation following Russia’s massive missile attack on the night of 24 April, which resulted in numerous casualties in Kyiv. This was reported by the President’s press service.

Zelenskyy informed the Italian side of the consequences of the shelling, which killed 12 civilians and injured 87 others. The President stressed that despite Ukraine’s readiness to cease fire without any conditions, Russia continues its aggression, which confirms the need to strengthen the defence capabilities of our country.

During the talks, Zelenskyy emphasised the critical importance of building an air defence system to protect the Ukrainian population. He expressed his gratitude to Maloney for her continued support and principled position in favour of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The leaders paid special attention to the outcomes of recent meetings in Paris and London between representatives of Ukraine, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Germany. The common position of the partners is that an unconditional ceasefire should be the first step towards achieving sustainable peace.

Zelenskyy and Maloney also discussed further steps to increase international pressure on Russia and the need to develop reliable security guarantees for Ukraine in the future. The two sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to the principles of international law and to supporting Ukraine in its fight for freedom.
