Russia has declared its readiness to resume direct talks with Ukraine, but is waiting for a “signal from Kyiv”. This was announced by Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the statements of the Ukrainian side regarding a possible peace summit. This was reported by the BBC.
“Moscow allegedly remains open to negotiations, but we need a signal from Kyiv that it is ready,” Peskov said, adding that he sees no such signs at the moment.
At the same time, the Kremlin spokesperson repeated the traditional narratives of Russian propaganda that peace must “take into account the realities on the ground”, referring to the temporary occupation of Ukrainian territories.
Ukraine has officially repeatedly emphasised that negotiations are possible only on the basis of a peace plan that provides for the full restoration of territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops and compensation for damages. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has clearly outlined the conditions for a just and sustainable peace in his “peace formula”.
Kyiv is also actively working on organising a Global Peace Summit, to which dozens of countries have been invited, but Russia is not invited because of its role as an aggressor.
The Kremlin’s statement came amid Moscow’s attempts to disrupt international initiatives in support of Ukraine and create the illusion of its “openness” to dialogue – on its own terms.
