The People’s Republic of China has refrained from commenting on reports of possible participation of North Korean military units in the war against Ukraine on the side of Russia. This was stated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a briefing in Beijing.
When journalists asked about information that DPRK troops could fight in Ukraine together with Russian forces, Mao Ning gave an evasive answer: “I do not have the relevant information”.
She also added that China’s position on Ukraine is “consistent and clear”, stressing the need for a peaceful, negotiated settlement of the conflict.
Earlier, the media reported that North Korea, which is actively supplying Russia with ammunition and missiles, may be preparing to send its own military units to participate in hostilities in Ukraine. This information has caused concern among the international community, as the participation of another country in the aggression against Ukraine could significantly change the dynamics of the war.
Official Kyiv and its Western partners called on the international community to increase pressure on Pyongyang and Moscow if such facts were confirmed.
At the moment, China is cautiously avoiding public comment on any involvement of its allies in the war, which once again demonstrates its desire to balance between supporting Russia and maintaining a neutral image in the international arena.
