Russia is actively expanding its military infrastructure on the border with NATO countries, preparing new forces for a possible conflict. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

In Petrozavodsk, 160 kilometres from the Finnish border, Russian engineers are working on a new army headquarters to command tens of thousands of soldiers. According to Western intelligence, the bulk of these troops are currently involved in the war against Ukraine, but in the future will become part of a grouping aimed at NATO.

At the same time, the Kremlin is building up its mobilisation resources, increasing weapons production, and modernising railway lines and infrastructure in the border regions. Military analysts warn: Russia is preparing forces for a potential war against the West in the coming years.

According to US estimates, about 30-40,000 recruits join the Russian army every month. The Russian Federation is also actively building new barracks and training grounds, expanding its arsenals and laying railway lines to the borders of Finland, Norway and Estonia.

The West responds by strengthening its defences: Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are strengthening their borders and withdrawing from international mine-weapons agreements. In the autumn of 2025, Russia is planning a large-scale Zapad exercise that could be a show of force to Europe.

“Moscow is preparing for a prolonged confrontation with the West and is changing the security architecture on the continent,” the WSJ notes.
