On Monday, Democratic Congressman Sri Thanedar formally submitted seven articles of impeachment against former US President Donald Trump, accusing him of gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of power and threats to American democracy, The Hill reports.

“When Trump ignores the Constitution, Congress and the courts, he is not ‘fighting for America’. He is destroying it,” Tanedar said, stressing that it is time to end the former president’s impunity.

Among the grounds for impeachment:

  • the deportation of US citizen Kilmar Abrego Garcia, contrary to the decision of the Supreme Court;
  • illegal cuts in funding for government agencies without congressional approval;
  • atough tariff policy that destabilises the global economy;
  • violation of the First Amendment, pressure on the media;
  • accusations of corruption and collection of personal data.

Particular indignation was caused by the fact that Trump, contrary to the Constitution, hinted at the possibility of running for a third term by presenting caps with the words “Trump 2028”.

Although the chances of passing impeachment articles in the House of Representatives are minimal due to the Republican majority, Tanedar’s initiative demonstrates the deep frustration of Democrats with Trump’s policies.

“The US has presidents, not kings. If we allow this to happen again, we are recognising that the president is above the law,” Tanedar concluded, calling on both Democrats and Republicans to support his move.
