On Monday, telecommunications company Tussass reported the loss of communication with isolated regions of Greenland due to an unexpected interruption of satellite services based in Spain. The affected areas lost access to the Internet, mobile and landline communications, television and radio. This was reported by Reuters.
According to the company’s statement, the connection was lost with the equipment in Maspalomas (Spain), which is critical for providing communications in regions that do not have access to a fibre-optic network.
“We are currently out of contact with our equipment in Maspalomas, Spain, which is vital to providing satellite services to customers in remote areas,” Tussass said in an official statement.
It is not yet known how many people were affected. The company also said that it was investigating a possible link between the incident and the large-scale power outage that paralysed Spain and Portugal on Monday. Partial restoration of power supply in the Iberian Peninsula began only in the evening.
The extent of the outage is currently being assessed and measures are being taken to restore connectivity in the affected areas.
