Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reacted sharply to the call of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had earlier publicly addressed the Hungarian people in the context of blocking Ukraine’s European integration path. Orban gave a clear signal: “There will be no Ukraine’s accession to the EU without Hungary.”

The head of the Hungarian government stated this on his Twitter page.

“President Zelenskyy addressed the Hungarian people yesterday. Mr President, what the Hungarian people think is not decided by the president in Kyiv or bureaucrats in Brussels,” Orban wrote.

The prime minister stressed that in Hungary, decisions are made by “all Hungarians“, not foreign leaders, and added:

“Every Hungarian will express his or her opinion on this matter. Whether you like it or not. That’s the way we do things.”

This statement demonstrates the intensification of the conflict between Kyiv and Budapest as Ukraine takes further steps towards EU membership.
