US President Donald Trump said he plans to appoint a new national security adviser within the next six months. He told reporters during a briefing on Sunday, Fox News reports.
“There are a lot of people who want the job,” Trump said, without naming specific names.
Currently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is acting as the advisor, temporarily combining both roles.
Journalists asked the president whether he was considering the candidacy of Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, one of Trump’s closest associates.
“Is Stephen Miller at the top of the government? I think he is already de facto in that role. He has a lot of influence on many issues and is a very valuable person in my administration,” Trump said.
It is expected that a list of final candidates could be announced by autumn. Political observers say Miller has a good chance, given his role in shaping key decisions in the Trump administration.
