Finland, Sweden and the UK conduct joint exercises in the Arctic with aircraft and artillery
From 12 to 31 May, large-scale joint military exercises involving the armed forces of Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom will take place at the Rovajärvi training ground in Finnish Lapland.
This was reported by Yle with reference to a press release from the Kainuu brigade.
About 6,500 troops are taking part in the exercise, including 900 soldiers from Sweden and 350 from the UK. The aim of the manoeuvres is to increase combat capabilities and improve cooperation between the armies of the three countries, taking into account the new security environment in the Baltic and Arctic regions.
During the exercise, it is planned:
- joint indirect fire;
- fire missions with direct air support;
- participation of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters of the British Army;
- flights of F/A-18 Hornet fighters of the Finnish Air Force.
These exercises take place against the backdrop of growing threats in the northern region of Europe and increased military cooperation following Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO.
