In Germany, a coalition agreement between the Conservatives (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) has been officially signed, paving the way for the formation of a new government headed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The government will be inaugurated on 6 May. This was reported by Reuters.
“Starting tomorrow, Germany will have a government that will decisively promote reform and investment. Our voice will be heard in Europe and around the world,” Merz said.
The new cabinet includes both experienced politicians and top executives from the corporate sector, which aims to give a new impetus to Europe’s largest economy.
Key assignments:
- Lars Klingbeil (SPD) – Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance, tasked with reforming the SPD and preparing the 2025 budget.
- Katharina Reiche (CDU), Minister of Economy and former CEO of an energy company, will lead the economic recovery.
- Johannes Wadefuhl (CDU) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible for relations with the US, China and Russia.
- Alexander Dobryndt (CSU) – Minister of the Interior, a stricter migration policy is expected.
- Boris Pistorius (SPD) – Minister of Defence, remains in office, emphasises preparations for possible military threats until 2029.
The new government is being formed at a difficult political and economic time, when the country is in recession and the far-right AfD party is gaining ground.
