Vatican City, 8 May 2025 – The white smoke over the Sistine Chapel announced the good news to the world: the Catholic cardinals have elected a new pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost, an American by birth, became the first pope from the United States, taking the name of Leo XIV. This event was a historic moment for the Catholic Church, which unites 1.4 billion believers worldwide.
Successful completion of the conclave
The conclave, which began on 7 May 2025 after the death of Pope Francis on 21 April, ended on the second day. On the evening of 8 May, thousands of people in St Peter’s Square erupted in cheers as white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St Peter’s Basilica announced the election of a new pontiff.
Cardinal Protodeacon Dominic Mamberty, appearing on the balcony of the basilica, proclaimed the traditional: “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: habemus papam!” (“I bring you great news: we have a Pope!”), announcing the name of the new Pope, Robert Prevost, who chose the name Leo XIV. Shortly afterwards, the new Pope addressed the crowd with his first blessing, Urbi et Orbi (To the City and the World).
Who is Robert Prevost?
Robert Prevost, a native of Chicago, had been a relatively little-known figure on the world stage until now. His election came as a surprise, as Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle were more often mentioned as favourites.
Prevost is known for his work in the Catholic Church, particularly in the areas of social justice and support for marginalised groups, which resonates with Pope Francis’ priorities. His election may indicate the cardinals’ desire to continue the progressive course aimed at openness, mercy and attention to the “peripheries” of the world.
The most diverse conclave in history
The 2025 conclave was the largest and most diverse in the history of the Church. 133 cardinals from around the world took part in the voting, reflecting the global nature of the modern Catholic Church.
The world’s reaction
The election of the first American pope has sparked a lively debate. In the United States, believers and religious leaders express pride in this historic achievement, while in the Vatican, some hope that Leo XIV will continue Francis’ reforms. At the same time, conservative circles in the Church are likely to keep a close eye on the new pope’s actions.
What’s next?
Leo XIV will officially begin his ministry with an inaugural mass in St Peter’s Square, the date of which will be announced shortly. His first speeches and actions are expected to provide insight into the key areas of his pontificate.
The Catholic world is looking forward to seeing how the new Pope will lead the Church in an era of global challenges, from climate change to social inequality and interreligious dialogue.
