The Security Service of Ukraine conducted a unique special operation in Zakarpattia region, detecting and neutralising a Hungarian military intelligence network – for the first time in the history of independent Ukraine.
Counterintelligence detained two agents who, on the instructions of a Hungarian intelligence officer, were collecting information about the region’s defence system, the mood of the local population and the reaction to the possible deployment of a “peacekeeping contingent” from Hungary.
One of the detainees is a former Ukrainian soldier from Berehove district who was recruited in 2021. He was activated in 2024. He was passing on information about the Defence Forces, the coordinates of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, military equipment on the black market, and the demographics of the Hungarian community. He used a special phone to communicate with his curators, which he received during the second meeting in March 2025.
The second detainee is a former servicewoman who, after her release, passed on information about the defence systems of the military unit and the presence of aircraft in the region.
Evidence of subversive activity was seized from the spies. They were both served with a notice of suspicion of high treason under martial law (Article 111(2) of the Criminal Code). They face life imprisonment.
The investigation is ongoing. Ukrainian counter-intelligence is identifying all those involved in this dangerous network, which was intended to undermine the defence capability of the border region.
