U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held phone conversations with newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, during which the situation in Ukraine was the central issue. This was reported by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
“Marco Rubio congratulated Mertz on his appointment and stressed the importance of the transatlantic partnership. The two sides discussed the common goal of ending the war in Ukraine in the context of the recent leaders’ meeting in Kyiv,” Bruce said.
At the same time, during a separate conversation with Lammy, the Secretary of State reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering position on the war in Ukraine.
“Our top priority is an immediate ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities,” the State Department spokesperson said.
Rubio’s contacts with key allies were the first in office since his appointment and signal an intensification of US diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.
