Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he will sign a new executive order aimed at radically reducing the price of prescription drugs in the country by 30% to 80%. He announced this on his Truth Social platform, AFP reports.
“The United States will pay the same price as the lowest-priced country in the world,” Trump said. According to him, the effect will be “almost instantaneous”.
The executive order is due to be signed on Monday at 9:00 a.m. local time (16:00 Kyiv time). It provides for measures to close the huge price gap between the US and other countries. In particular, Americans pay 2.5 times more for medicines than, for example, in France.
This is Trump’s second step towards pharmaceutical reform: in April, he signed a decree allowing the import of cheaper drugs and expanding the ability of state insurers to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies.
Trump made lowering drug prices a key pledge in his 2024 election campaign, promising to “end pharmaceutical greed”.
