US President Donald Trump has said that he does not rule out a trip to Turkey if talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives take place in Istanbul. At the same time, he is not surprised by the absence of Vladimir Putin.

Trump said this during his visit to Qatar, CNN reports.

“I was thinking about going. If something happens, I will go on Friday if it is appropriate,” the US president said.

Putin was not expected

Trump also commented on the possible participation of the Russian president in the talks, making it clear that he did not expect him to appear:

“No, I didn’t expect it. I even said: “Why is he going if I’m not going?”. Because I wasn’t planning to. I would have gone, but I wasn’t going to. And I said: ‘I don’t think he’ll go if I don’t go’. And it turned out to be right,” Trump said.

The day before, a number of sources reported that a potential diplomatic format was being prepared in Turkey with the participation of representatives of Ukraine and Russia. There are currently no officially confirmed details of these plans.
