On 16 May, a trilateral meeting of the delegations of Ukraine, the United States and Turkey took place in Istanbul, followed by direct talks between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia. Against the backdrop of these events, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski voiced his clear position, emphasising that: The European Union and NATO will not allow the revival of the Russian Empire.
The head of Polish diplomacy wrote about this on the social network X.
“For more than 20 years, attempts have been made to Europeanise Russia. But it was Russia that rejected these efforts and decided to restore the empire,” Sikorsky said.
In his opinion, NATO has existed from the very beginning as a means of deterring Russian aggression, and now this course is only getting stronger.
“By the end of the decade, we will be stronger, and Russia will have a terrible hangover,” the diplomat said, reacting to the talks in Istanbul.
Sikorsky also stressed that the West will not leave Ukraine alone in the issue of security, independence and territorial integrity.
As a reminder, on 16 May, the first negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian sides in several months took place in Istanbul, initiated with the mediation of Turkey and the United States. The details of the meeting have not been officially disclosed, but according to diplomatic sources, the issues of a potential ceasefire, humanitarian access and prisoner exchange were discussed.
