President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. The meeting was also attended by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This was reported by the President’s spokesman Serhiy Nikiforov, Ukrinform reports.
“I have just finished a meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance, which was also attended by Marco Rubio,” Nikiforov said briefly.
The details of the talks have not yet been disclosed, but it is expected that the central topic was security assistance to Ukraine, including new arms supplies, protection of energy infrastructure, and possible steps towards international peace initiatives.
This is Zelenskyy’s first official meeting with J.D. Vance since the latter took over as vice president in the Trump administration. It took place against the backdrop of:
- discussing a new US aid package;
- promoting a sanctions bill against Russia in the Senate;
- preparations for the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland.
Analysts see this meeting as a test of the new administration’s political support for Ukraine. The participation of Marco Rubio, a well-known supporter of a tougher course towards Russia, may indicate that the White House’s foreign policy line is coherent.
The meeting is expected to be followed by a separate statement from the Office of the President and the US State Department.
