Canada’s newly appointed Defence Minister David McGuinty said that the country will develop strategic defence cooperation not only with the United States but also with the European Union to assert national sovereignty and security.
He made this statement when commenting on Donald Trump’s scandalous proposal to join the US Golden Dome missile defence system for $61 billion or agree to annexation,
“We will continue to do what is right for Canada and Canadians… We will also continue to build our relationship not only with the United States but also with the EU, as there is significant economic potential for Canada, particularly in the European ReArms programme,” McGuinty said.
The minister stressed that Canada independently controls its defence decisions, including participation in NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defence Command. At the same time, McGuinty evaded estimates of the cost of joining the missile defence project, as announced by Trump:
“I’m not in a position to assess the figures. When we submit the budget, we will be able to say much more about what we are going to do,” he added.
