Former US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a six-month ban on foreigners who intended to study or participate in exchange programmes at Harvard University. The decision, according to an official statement, is justified by national security considerations, Reuters reports.
“This is yet another illegal act of repression that violates Harvard’s First Amendment rights,” the university said in response to Trump’s move.
The executive order also instructs the US State Department to consider cancelling existing visas for Harvard students who are subject to the restrictions. The ban may be extended beyond 6 months.
The move is a new round of conflict between the White House and Harvard, which has repeatedly criticised the administration’s immigration and education policies during Trump’s term.
