US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of US intervention in the armed conflict between Israel and Iran. He said this in an interview with ABC News.
“Maybe we will intervene (in the conflict between Israel and Iran – ed.),” Trump said, adding that the United States is currently staying away from direct involvement in the fighting.
At the same time, the White House chief confirmed that he had a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin on Saturday, during which they discussed the situation in the Middle East.
“He is ready (to mediate – ed.). He called me about it. We talked about it for a long time,” Trump said, emphasising his openness to the Russian president’s possible mediation in resolving the conflict.
According to Bloomberg, the United States has already deployed fighter jets, ships, and air defence systems near the region to protect its own forces and facilities from possible attacks by Iran. At the same time, official Washington does not take part in Israeli strikes on Iranian territory, but helps Israel repel attacks.
It is worth noting that Russia is a strategic ally of Iran, and the two countries have repeatedly acted together against the United States in military conflicts in Syria and Iraq. Trump’s position on Putin’s possible mediation may cause controversy among both US politicians and US allies.
There have been no comments from Israel or Iran on Trump’s statements so far.
