G7 prepares new sanctions: London promises to strike at Russian war machine

британський прем'єр-міністр Кейр Стармер

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that on Tuesday the UK, together with its Group of Seven partners, would announce a new package of sanctions against Russia. Its purpose is to increase pressure on the Kremlin’s military-industrial complex and reduce Putin’s ability to finance the war against Ukraine, the BBC reports .

“We are increasing economic pressure on Putin to make him realise that it is in his interest and Russia’s interest to seek peace,” Starmer said from the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada. According to him, the allies are working on measures that will “reduce Russia’s energy revenues” and cut off the ways of financing its “illegal war”.

The British government has not yet released the details of the package, but has clarified that the new restrictions will be aimed at the Russian defence industry. Sources also indicate that the G7 countries are discussing a reduction in the price ceiling for Russian oil from the current $60 to $45 per barrel, an initiative supported by the European Commission.

Starmer stressed: “Russia does not hold all the cards”. This statement should send a signal that even after the change of governments – particularly in the UK – support for Ukraine remains unchanged.
