On the night of 18 June, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) carried out a large-scale military operation, using more than 50 air force fighters to strike at targets near Tehran. The main target was Iran’s nuclear and missile facilities, which, according to the Israeli military, are directly related to the creation of weapons of mass destruction. This was reported by Ynet with reference to an official statement by the IDF.
The target is the nuclear programme
According to the Israeli army, the key target of the attack was a centrifuge plant in Tehran. According to Israeli intelligence, it was at this facility that Iran was trying to increase the rate of uranium enrichment for nuclear weapons.
“It is important to emphasise that civilian nuclear programmes do not require uranium enrichment at this level,” the IDF said in a statement.
A number of other strategic targets were also struck, including factories that produced components for surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. According to Israel, these missiles are used against Israeli targets.
Objects under attack
Iranian media confirmed that the attacked facilities included a military plant in Khodzhir, near Tehran. This particular plant was already the target of Israeli strikes in October 2024.
In addition, the Imam Hossein University, a research institution closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was hit. This university is known as a training centre for Iranian military engineers and developers of high-tech weapons.
Iran’s response
In response to the attack, according to Israeli sources, Iran fired about 15 rockets towards Israel on the morning of 18 June. Most of them were successfully intercepted by air defence systems. No casualties or damage have been reported in Israel so far.
