The administration of US President Donald Trump has sent a signal to Iran that it is not planning a full-scale war or regime change, and that the strikes on nuclear facilities were one-off. The Wall Street Journal writes about this, citing sources.

According to the publication, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff was authorised to communicate with Tehran to preserve the chances of a diplomatic settlement and de-escalation in the region.

“The Trump administration has made it clear to Iran that this was a one-off attack, not the start of a war for regime change,” the source said.

According to the WSJ, Trump gave Iran up to two weeks to comply with US demands before ordering the strikes. The US president made the final decision to attack on Saturday afternoon at a meeting at his club in New Jersey.

“The purpose of the strikes is to create a situation where no one expects it,” a senior White House official said.

The publication adds that the decision to attack was made after weeks of discussions, careful preparation and coordination with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
