On Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hinted that the United States under the current administration has focused too much on domestic politics and has retreated from its international responsibilities as the world’s leading power. The Chinese foreign minister said this during a meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Beijing.

“Some major countries have betrayed their international responsibilities and put their own interests above the common interests of the international community,” Wang Yi said, pointing to Washington.

He stressed that the permanent members of the UN Security Council should not only declare but also actually fulfil their obligations, promoting global peace and development.

In response, Tony Blair called for closer coordination:

“Isolating China is doomed to fail. The world needs to understand China better and cooperate with it.”

The former head of the British government, who led London from 1997 to 2007, also stressed the need to expand dialogue at all levels, from the public to the private sector.

In addition, Wang Yi and Blair discussed the latest developments around the Iranian-Israeli conflict and the “Ukrainian crisis” – as Beijing refers to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
