Trump before the NATO summit in The Hague: “I hope a lot will be achieved”

US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the outcome of the NATO summit, which starts today in The Hague. In a post on Truth Social, the head of the White House stressed the importance of dialogue with European allies and compared the expected “calmer” discussion within the Alliance to the recent crisis in the Middle East.

“Going to NATO, where, at worst, it will be a much calmer period than the one I just experienced with Israel and Iran,” Trump wrote.

The US President added that he was looking forward to meeting with his European counterparts:

“I look forward to meeting all my good European friends and others. I hope a lot will be achieved!”

Expectations from the NATO Summit

The NATO Summit is taking place against the backdrop of several international crises:

  • The escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran
  • Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine
  • Disputes over the financing of NATO member states’ defence budgets

Analysts predict that one of the main issues of the meeting will be to clarify the US role in the Alliance after a series of ambiguous statements by Trump regarding Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty on Collective Defence.

Trump’s comments indicate an attempt to shift the focus from crisis events (in particular, the tensions between Israel and Iran, which have brought the world to the brink of escalation in recent days) to a more constructive international dialogue within NATO.

It could also signal to allies that the US intends to play an active role in shaping Euro-Atlantic security, despite contradictory domestic positions on supporting Ukraine.

The summit is expected to discuss:

  • Strengthening NATO’s eastern flank
  • Increase defence budgets of member states
  • Integration of the defence industry between the US, Europe and Ukraine
  • Coordinating a response to Iranian actions in the region
