EU increases gas imports from Russia, surpassing supplies from the U.S.

For the first time in nearly two years, the European Union imported more gas from Russia than from the United States. According to data from Brussels-based consultancy Bruegel, EU countries purchased 12.7 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia in the second quarter of 2024 (April to June), compared to 12.3 billion cubic meters from the U.S.

This trend raises concerns as gas supplies from Russia declined only slightly compared to the first quarter of 2024, while imports from the U.S. fell more sharply. These figures indicate that despite geopolitical tensions and sanctions, the EU remains significantly dependent on Russian gas, which could have serious implications for the region’s energy security.
