Signing of a strategic memorandum

On June 26, a strategic memorandum was signed in Tehran between the Russian energy giant Gazprom and the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) regarding the organization of the supply of Russian gas to Iran. This important event marked a new stage in the development of energy relations between the two countries, which can significantly change the landscape of the region’s energy market.

Presence and participation of high officials

The memorandum was signed in the presence of the acting head of the executive power of Iran, Mohammad Mohber. Gazprom representatives noted that the document is aimed at creating long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation. During the visit, the chairman of the board of Gazprom, Oleksiy Miller, also held talks with Iran’s oil minister, Javad Ouji, during which they discussed the priority steps for the implementation of the memorandum and other areas of cooperation in the energy sector.

The intensity of cooperation between Russia and Iran

This visit was the second in 2024 for Gazprom management to Iran, which underlines the importance and intensity of cooperation between the two countries. In 2023, two official contacts also took place: the first – during the visit of the Gazprom delegation to Tehran in February, and the second – in autumn at the Russian Energy Week forum in Moscow.

Natural gas reserves in Iran

Iran has significant natural gas reserves of about 29.6 trillion cubic meters, which is 16% of world reserves. These data make Iran second only to Russia in terms of natural gas reserves in the world. Gazprom’s presence in Iran demonstrates the country’s strategic importance on the world energy map and opens up new opportunities for the development of bilateral cooperation in the gas sector.

A new era in the relations between Russia and Iran

The signing of the memorandum could mark the beginning of a new era in relations between Russia and Iran, contributing to the strengthening of energy security and the development of gas supply infrastructure. Further steps to implement the memorandum are expected to be discussed in the coming months, adding intrigue and significance to the event.
