Ukraine has gained a new powerful ally on its path to peace: Turkey is ready to mediate in the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war. This step by Ankara, supported by US President Donald Trump, opens up new prospects for ending the hostilities and is a real breakthrough in diplomatic efforts. Why Turkey’s involvement is not just a step, but a real leap forward for Ukraine, is explored in the article by Time Ukraine Israel.

Erdogan and Trump: a diplomatic tandem for peace

On 5 May 2025, US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone conversation that could change the course of history. The leaders discussed ways to end the war in Ukraine, and Trump enthusiastically announced cooperation with Ankara. “I look forward to working with President Erdogan to stop this senseless but deadly war between Russia and Ukraine – and to do it now!” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. He called the conversation “extremely productive” and even announced Erdogan’s visit to Washington, and received an invitation to visit Turkey.

This dialogue was a logical continuation of the “telephone diplomacy” that Erdogan actively supports. At the end of April, the Turkish leader stressed that together with Trump, they were able to untie the most complex geopolitical knots through dialogue. And now Turkey is officially ready to take on the role of mediator, which is not only a diplomatic gesture but also a strategic step that strengthens Ukraine’s position in the international arena.
