Israeli Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut in Hebrew) is celebrated annually on the 5th of Iyar, the day when the State of Israel was declared independent in 1948. This event marked a historic turning point for the Jewish people after millennia of exile, persecution and the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of six million Jews during World War II.
Proclamation of the state
On 14 May 1948, on the eve of the end of the British Mandate in Palestine, David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel, proclaimed the creation of an independent Jewish state. This was the realisation of the dream of the Zionist movement, which emerged in the late nineteenth century and sought to create a national home for Jews in their historic homeland.
Immediately after declaring independence, Israel faced war: neighbouring Arab countries attacked the newly created state. Despite the difficult circumstances, Israel survived and subsequently strengthened its independence.
The importance of Israel to Jews around the world
Israel has a special meaning for Jews, no matter where they live. It is not only a state, but also a symbol of national rebirth, spiritual centre and unity. For many Jews, Israel is the place where Jewish culture, language (Hebrew), traditions and religion are preserved.
In addition, Israel is a guarantee of security for the Jewish people after centuries of discrimination and genocide. Every Jew has the right to repatriate to Israel under the Law of Return. This adds to the sense of security and belonging to a large community.
Celebrating Yom HaAtzmaut
Independence Day in Israel is a time of celebration, pride and gratitude. People take to the streets with flags, concerts, fireworks, air shows and ceremonies are held. But at the same time, this day is also accompanied by deep reflection – the day before is the Day of Remembrance of Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror (Yom HaZikaron).
Conclusion.
Israeli Independence Day is not just a national holiday. It is a symbol of survival, national pride and unity. Israel has become home to millions of Jews and the heart of the Jewish people, who, despite all the difficulties of history, were able to revive their statehood in the land of their ancestors.
