Kyiv, 16 May 2025 –
Sergeant Hryhoriy Pivovarov, call sign “Jew”, a citizen of Israel, is one of the soldiers who stood up to defend Ukraine from the very first years of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Since 2014, he has voluntarily joined the ranks of Ukrainian defenders, serving with the legendary 24th separate assault battalion “Aidar”, where he is currently acting as an assault company commander.
Over the years, Hryhorii has received dozens of combat decorations and awards, including:
- The Order for Courage is a full cavalier (all three degrees);
- Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III class;
- Medal “Defender of the Fatherland”;
- Medal “For Wounding” – he has already received four such wounds;
- other departmental awards.
And despite everything, he is still not a citizen of Ukraine.
In 2017, Sergeant Pivovarov officially applied for Ukrainian citizenship. Eight years have passed, but the issue has not been resolved. This is not just a formality – without citizenship, Hryhoriy cannot be promoted to officer and take up the command position he is actually already holding on the battlefield.
This is an unfortunate and unfair paradox: a soldier who shed his blood for Ukraine has no legal status in the country he fights for.
Public appeal to the authorities:
The media and the public are calling on government officials – including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Migration Service, and the Presidential Administration – to intervene and facilitate the granting of Ukrainian citizenship to Sergeant Pivovarov.
This is not only a matter of law, it is a matter of dignity and gratitude to the real heroes.
