Elbit Wins Tender for High-Precision Mortar Shells

As reported by vesty, Defense company Elbit has secured a contract to supply high-precision mortar shells known as “Steel Sting” (עוקץ פלדה). The contract, valued at up to 190 million shekels, spans two years.

About the “Steel Sting”

The Steel Sting is a 120mm mortar shell equipped with dual guidance systems, including laser and GPS navigation. This technology ensures exceptional accuracy and minimizes the risk to civilians. The shell is designed for use in both urban and open terrain, with an effective range of up to 10 km.

Development and First Use

Unveiled in March 2021, the “Steel Sting” has been integrated into Israel’s multi-year defense plan “Tnufa,” meeting the needs of the Israel Defense Forces. The shell has been demonstrated in various configurations, including with the “Cardom” mortar systems mounted on M113 armored personnel carriers and Hummer 4X4 vehicles.

Combat Application

The “Steel Sting” was first used in combat in October 2023, with special forces from “Maglan” launching strikes against Hamas targets in Gaza. The shell offers precision comparable to air or ground-launched rockets.

Advantages and Current Use

The shell’s rapid availability, operational efficiency, and relatively low cost make it a valuable asset compared to high-precision artillery systems. Following its initial deployment in Gaza, the shells have also been used on the border with Lebanon against Hezbollah terrorists. To date, 12 rounds have been fired, with half used in Gaza.
